Sports for Hope initiative, sponsored by the Embassy of France in Nigeria through the “Innovative Projects of Civil Societies and Coalitions of Actors” (PISCCA) fund, kicked off in August 2019 to create avenues for inclusion, empowerment, and health improvement for 360 youth – 220 persons with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and 140 persons without intellectual disabilities (partners) in eight (8) communities across Lagos state – Agege, Ajegunle, Bariga, Ikorodu, Isale Eko, Isolo, Mushin and Surulere. 

To achieve the outcomes, the initiative organizes weekly sports training and competition in Football or Volleyball encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The physical sessions are complemented with information sessions spanning topics such as Mental Health, Nutrition, Entrepreneurship, Finance and more to inspire, motivate and educate participants towards positive life choices.

Objectives

  • Provide opportunities for people with and without ID to discover their similarities and develop friendships
  • Increase access to sporting opportunities and healthy lifestyles for youth with and without ID
  • Increase access of youths with and without intellectual disabilities to make optimal choices in life by being choice architects compassing youths in the direction of positive opportunities Improve the knowledge and perception of the abilities of persons with ID in the communities.
Expected Outcomes

  • An improvement in the attitude and perception of the communities towards persons with ID
  • Participants are motivated and equipped with the knowledge to make positive life transforming choices Participants understand the importance and choose to pursue a healthier lifestyle.
