Special Olympics Nigeria promotes inclusion through Youth Activation program at Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School

Special Olympics Nigeria organized a one-day Youth Activation Program on the 2nd of July 2019 at Akande Memorial Secondary School, Ikoyi, Lagos. The event aimed at raising awareness about Special Olympics Nigeria (SO Nigeria) and people with intellectual disabilities (PWIDs) among students in the school.

The program was anchored by Ibiyemi Ayeni, Special Olympics Nigeria Manager, Initiatives. She informed the students about Special Olympics, Special Olympics Nigeria, the organization’s mission, vision and objectives for driving the inclusion of PWIDs into society. She explained what Special Olympics stand for, highlighting the differences between Special Olympics and other international sporting bodies such as Olympics and Paralympics. She also emphasized the need for young people to take part in the inclusion movement throughout the program, to get the students thinking about ways they can join the inclusion movement.

She ended the presentation highlighting ways in which the students could be part of Special Olympics Nigeria - as volunteers, as unified partners, or by creating a school club. She encouraged them to, follow SO Nigeria on social media platforms, urging them to join the movement and make a difference in the world.

Adeola Oladugba, Manager, Sports Programs, organized a question and answer segment to ensure that the orientation session was understood. He emphasized key points that the students should take away from the activation program. After the question and answer segment, SO Nigeria athletes present were given an opportunity to introduce themselves, including their sports participation at the national and international levels and their medals won. The event ended with a dance competition between Special Olympics Nigeria athlete, Kelechi Eze and a student of the school.

The program was attended by 40 students, 8 athletes and some members of SO Nigeria staff.
