SPECIAL OLYMPICS NIGERIA CELEBRATES WORLD AIDS DAY IN UYO AKWA IBOM STATE

The event which was organized alongside the Special Olympics Healthy athletes programme started by 10:00 am and featured a variety of activities had in attendance about 319 persons which include Special Olympics athletes, their family members and other community members. World AIDS Day which is commemorated each year on 1st December, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.

Major activities at this year’s World AIDS Day event include a health talk by Mr Onoitem of the Professional Association of Public Health Nursing Officers of Nigeria (PAPHNON) Akwa Ibom state branch who gave a lecture on HIV/AIDS and Malaria prevention and treatment. Other activities at the event include a unified soccer match, Voluntary Counselling and Screening tests on HIV and Malaria as well as the Healthy athlete screening which featured visual screening, dental screening and Medfest (general body check).
