Special Olympics Nigeria welcomes her athletes to the 2018 National Games and 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Special Olympics Nigeria 2018 National Games and 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics with the theme, "Create Inclusive Communities", commenced on the 10th of June 2018 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. This year's National Games brought people with intellectual disabilities (athletes) together to compete in 5 Olympics type sports - Athletics, Basketball, Unified Soccer, Badminton and Table Tennis for a chance to represent Nigeria at the 2019 World Summer Games at Abu Dhabi. 

The board chairman, Mr. Victor Osibodu, in his opening remarks, welcomed the coaches and athletes who came from all over the country for the National Games. He also appreciated sponsors, partners and volunteers for their efforts towards driving the inclusion revolution. The Special Olympics Nigeria athlete leader, Tomiwa Adeyemo also gave his remarks encouraging his fellow athletes to remember the athlete oath that says, "Let me win! If I cannot win, let me be brave at the attempt." He adviced them to feel free to express themselves and enjoiy the game.

The opening ceremony was well attended by high profile Nigerians, media personalities, families of athletes, and sponsors - Lagos State Government, The Temple Management, Nikky Taurus, Sightique, Breakfast King,  Printstudios, Channels TV, Lagos State Sport Commission, CocaCola, and ExxonMobil. To mark the 50th year of the Special Olympics, there was cutting of the anniversary cake by athletes, family members, and sponsors. The event featured an electrifying performance by sensational singer Jeff Akoh, cutting of the 50th-anniversary cake, Athletes parade, award presentation, lightening of the Flame of Hope and hoisting of the anniversary flag. The opening ceremony ended with the All-Star Unified Basketball match.

The 2018 National Games ends on the 13th of June with the closing ceremony.
