SPECIAL OLYMPICS NIGERIA FAMILY HEALTH FORUM IN BENIN CITY EDO STATE

Special Olympics Nigeria organized a one day Family Health Forum in Benin City Edo state South – South Nigeria. The forum which is a community event took place on the 2nd December 2017 at Ihogbe Secondary School ICE road Benin City and had in attendance people with intellectual disability, their family members and other community members. The event was organized in partnership with Society for Family Health (SFH) who provided medical support for our athletes.

Major activities at the event include a health talk given by Mrs Ogundipe of SFH. She gave a health talk on Malaria and HIV. She spoke of the need for a clean environment free from stagnant water and all forms of dirt as a proper way of keeping mosquitoes from our environment and advised those present to always visit the hospital for proper medical check-up and diagnosis of malaria. She also spoke on HIV. She advised all present to know their HIV status as it is the only way they can truly stay safe. She encouraged the young people present at the event to abstain from sex while also encouraging the married couples to stay faithful to their partners. According to Mrs Ogundipe, multiple sexual partners is the major way by which HIV is spread hence it is advisable to use a condom if one cannot stick with one partner. She further highlighted the dangers of sharing unsterilized sharp objects which can also spread HIV if contaminated by an HIV positive person.

A unified soccer match comprising athletes and partners was played by two teams; Team Doctor Vs Team Mosquito. The match was won by Team Doctor who defeated Team Mosquito by 3 goals to nil.
Voluntary Counselling and Screening Test (HIV and Malaria tests) were also conducted at the event by our medical partners. Anti-malaria drugs were prescribed and given to those who test positive to malaria while mosquito nets were also distributed to all present.

The event which commenced at 10:00 am in the morning came to a close at about 2:00 pm in the afternoon after all present had been tested. Family members of athletes were very happy to have attended the event and commended Special Olympics Nigeria for bringing such an eye-opening event to Benin City.
