EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER HONORED WITH THE ARTHUR ASHE COURAGE AWARD

EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER HONORED WITH THE ARTHUR ASHE COURAGE AWARD

Special Olympics Founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was honoured posthumously with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 25th ESPYS Presented by Capital One on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. The award was presented by former U.S first lady Michelle Obama to Tim Shriver, who now chairs the Special Olympics and accepted the award on her behalf.

“I am here tonight to honour a remarkable woman, a woman who believed that everyone has something to contribute and everyone deserves a chance. When we give others the chance to fulfil their greatest potential, we all win. Through her passionate service, she made our world more welcoming, inclusive and fair”. Mrs Obama said before being joined by Special Olympians.

In his acceptance Speech, Tim Shriver had this to say of his mother and late founder;
“She knew one thing, that the athletes of Special Olympics deserve the same glory as any athlete around the world. She’s here in the minds and hearts of those who believe in inclusion and are willing to act on it,…This movement she created almost 50 years ago is not done yet”.

The late founder dedicated her life to championing the rights and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities. She is fondly remembered as a tireless advocate for children’s health and disability issues. This award is presented annually to individuals whose contributions transcend sports and embody the spirit of the trophy’s namesake; Arthur Ashe, a tennis legend who dedicated his life to human rights activism.
