2017 SKILLZ FOR LIFE'S FAMILY HEALTH FORUM (South East)

In a continuous effort to reduce the occurrences and death from Malaria and HIV among people with intellectual disability, Special Olympics Nigeria held a Family Health Forum in Orlu, Imo state. The event took place on Friday 24th November 2017 at The School For The Mentally Challenged Orlu, Imo state.

SO Nigeria partnered with Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) to organize the event that was attended by athletes from School For The Mentally Challenged Orlu (host school), Special Education Resource Centre Owerri and Special School For the Challenged Orodo as well as the family members of the athletes and their teachers.

Major highlights of the event include a health talk given by Dr Agbasimere of IMSUTH. He gave a lecture on the need for people to always keep their environment clean and free from stagnant water where mosquitos can breed. Other notable activities at the event were;
  • Voluntary Counselling and Screening Test (VCT) which was carried out by laboratory scientist from IMSUTH,
  • A unified soccer match,
  • Distribution of anti-malaria drugs to those who tested positive for malaria as well as mosquito nets for malaria prevention.
  • A dancing competition between the athletes and their family members and lots of fun.
Family members of athletes were delighted to have attended the event and commended Special Olympics Nigeria for organizing such an event to create the much-needed awareness on Malaria and the HIV pandemic.
