In honor of the founder of Special Olympics; Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics Nigeria launched the healthy athletes FUNfitness initiative on Saturday 23 September 2017.

This event was held in partnership with The Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital; a Nigerian Federal psychiatric hospital in Yaba, a suburb of Lagos. 49 of their members were recruited as volunteers who helped coordinate physiotherapy sessions.
The EKS day event kicked off with welcome remarks by the Initiatives program coordinator– Mr. Oluwasogo Solanke who talked briefly on the activities of Special Olympics Nigeria; the Young Athletes program, and the basis for the EKS day celebration. The Health Coordinator– Obianuju Asiodu also spoke on the healthy athlete’s initiative. She encouraged parents to endeavor to have their children screened by the physiotherapist.
The event included a young athletes’ fun day, unified soccer match as well as other activities such as table tennis matches, bouncing castle, and face painting.  
Special Olympics Nigeria athlete Kabiru Iwalesi and parent Mrs. Monsurat Iwalesi shared their experiences with SO Nigeria thus far. Kabiru said “I really enjoyed myself, and I don’t think I would change anything about the day.”
