Unified Sports

Special Olympics Unified Sports is an initiative that combines approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (called Partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Matching of athletes and Partners is defined on a sport-by-sport basis. Throughout the year, in a variety of sports ranging from basketball to floor hockey, Unified Sports athletes and partners improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills and help to overcome prejudices about intellectual disability.

Unified Soccer is sponsored by Coca-Cola Nigeria. The 2014 SONig/Coca-Cola Unified Soccer Tournament started in Ogun state, went through Oyo state, Osun state and finally ended in Lagos state were the last team immerged. The four winning teams from each region participated at the National games to determine who will represent Nigeria at the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles, USA. All SONigeria athletes displayed possession of good soccer skills proving to all that they have a lot of ability in their seeming disability. Team Lagos emerged the winner at the National Games and will represent Nigeria at the 2015 World Games.

Special Olympics Nigeria plans to build on these matches to develop a framework for Unified Sports in Nigeria.
