LILIAN AKUMA (VOLUNTEER)

What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Lilian Akuma, I am a physiotherapist at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Yaba and a volunteer at the 8th annual EKS day Special Olympics Nigeria FUNfitness screening.

Have you ever worked with Special Olympics Nigeria?
This is my first time partnering with SO Nigeria and it has been a very wonderful experience. I see how the parents hope that their children will be able to do great things in the society.

Do you think the fight against the discrimination of PWID should continue?
Yes, I believe the fight should continue. The parents are excited to have opportunities to fight alongside organizations like Special Olympics. In fact, during one of my encounters at the screening exercise, a parent told me that until now, she never knew that there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for her child. She also said that the fight against discrimination against persons with intellectual disabilities should continue; PWID should have better access to health care services just like the FUNfitness screening. Everyone has a role to play to make the good work of SONigeria grow and increase.

What did you like about today’s event and screening exercise?
I liked that there was a football game because I love to play football, and I promise to score two goals in the football match on the field. I am happy to be here and I will practice the exercise the doctor said I should do with my mom.

What is your name and what do you do?
My name is mrs. Babalola, I am Daniel’s mom and a business woman.

How long has Daniel been involved in the Special Olympics Nigeria program?
He has been involved for about 3 years.

Have you noticed any changes in your son since he started participating in SO Nigeria?
My son has been different ever since he started participating in SONigeria activities, health screenings, games, etc. I am glad I took the bold step to put him in a special school because it was through this that he got involved with SONigeria. He is a beneficiary of Special Olympics Nigeria activities. I hope this program continues because it has made me to understand my son better.

How did you get to know about Special Olympics Nigeria?
I got to know about SONigeria from the clinical director Dr. Remi Durojaye, who I have known for several years. She invited me to be a part of the program and I decided to join because I wanted to encourage the parents of people with intellectual disability to see that their children are indeed special, and can do amazing things.

Would you like to share any experience you’ve had during this program?
I remember seeing a parent being impatient with her child because the child refused to cooperate during the screening exercise. I saw the need to educate her on the proper way to handle the situation. I was able to encourage the mother that patience is key, and not violence.
