Making a difference: One Net At A Time

Making a difference: One Net At A Time

Imagine being a special needs child, in a country that does little for people with disabilities- there would be government special schools, yes, but these schools barely have enough to take care of its students let alone provide the emotional support needed. This is where organizations like Special Olympics come in. Organizations that see beyond people’s disabilities- empowering them to believe they too can achieve anything.

Recently, a team from Special Olympics Nigeria went down to Ekiti from Lagos for a Family Health Forum organized with the Skillz For Life Initiative- a program sponsored by Exxon Mobil. In the course of screening, the team noticed that the school (Government Special School, Ido Ekiti) did not have window nets to protect them from mosquitos or even proper windows! They knew then that something really had to be done; they just needed to get back to Lagos to plan.

Mosquito nets, window nets, and sliding glass window panes were purchased, and a trip to Ekiti ensued.  As the team arrived, a voluntary counseling and testing event was held for the members of the community before they got to work installing and distributing.

Try to envision the faces of the students when they saw their new windows and received their nets?  Priceless.

This is what the Special Olympics is all about- empowering people with intellectual disabilities, even if it is as simple as giving them their basic needs.
